Staying active through sports is a great way to keep in shape and stay healthy. If a person suffers a blow to the head on the sports field, removing him from play to be evaluated by a doctor is the first step. Even slight injuries can be more serious than they might let on initially. According to the Sports Concussion Institute, “headache and dizziness are most commonly reported symptoms immediately following concussions for injured athletes, but an estimated 47 percent of athletes do not report feeling any symptoms after a concussive blow.” Without a full concussion examination and clearance by a doctor, players should not be let back onto the field.

To prevent issues from head trauma and concussions, always:

  • Wear protective gear like helmets when required. Protective gear is made to prevent injuries.
  • Play by the rules- poor sportsmanship or playing rogue can be dangerous for yourself and other players on the field
  • Stay in shape to maintain balance and avoid falls
  • Educate yourself and others on the dangers of concussions
  • Take head injuries seriously and always have an examination by a doctor who is educated in concussion treatment after a blow to the head.
